Avion KLM
This is a rare find. This model was only produced for 4 months in 1971!

During the Cold War, European airlines flying to the East (Japan) were not allowed to fly over Soviet Union territory. Most airlines flew via Alaska, a longer and more expensive route. In 1971, KLM made a deal with the Soviets. For a brief period (4 months in 1971 only) KLM's blue lettering could be seen on Ilyushin IL-62s. But why, in the middle of the Cold War, was the KLM logo on a Russian machine? And why were passengers on board served by KLM flight attendants?

Airspace
During the Cold War, the Soviet Union closed its airspace to Western airlines. Thus, flights between Europe and the Far East had to make a refueling stop. Most airlines decided to make a stopover in Anchorage, Alaska. To offer travelers the opportunity to fly to the Far East more quickly, KLM passengers have the option of flying with Aeroflot. The Russian national carrier flew from Amsterdam to Moscow and then to Tokyo, Japan. The flights were performed with the Russian four-engine Ilyushin IL-62. While the pilots were supplied by Aeroflot, the cabin crew on the flights were partly supplied by KLM. It was unusual in the 1970s for two airlines to have such a partnership, let alone a Western airline and the national airline of the Soviet Union. To made it look like a real KLM flight, the KLM logo was pasted on the Il-62s instead of the Aeroflot logo. KLM is one of the few western airlines to have ever had its logo on an aircraft built in the Soviet Union.

Short term
The collaboration turned out not to be a great success and it was therefore discontinued after a few months. Until the opening of Russian airspace, KLM operated flights to Tokyo and other destinations in the Far East via Anchorage. While it may seem that Russia's airspace is open like that of most other countries, that is not the case. Russia generally only allows one airline per country to fly over the country. Airlines also have to pay quite a lot to be allowed to fly over Russia.

**Pendant la guerre froide**  
Les compagnies aériennes européennes volant vers l'Est (Japon) n'étaient pas autorisées à survoler le territoire de l'Union soviétique. La plupart des compagnies faisaient escale en Alaska, un itinéraire plus long et plus coûteux. En 1971, KLM a conclu un accord avec les Soviétiques. Pendant une courte période (4 mois en 1971 seulement), le lettrage bleu de KLM était visible sur les Iliouchine IL-62. Mais pourquoi, en pleine guerre froide, le logo KLM figurait-il sur un avion russe ? Et pourquoi des passagers étaient-ils servis à bord par des hôtesses de l'air KLM ?  

**Espace aérien**  
Pendant la guerre froide, l'Union soviétique fermait son espace aérien aux compagnies aériennes occidentales. Les vols entre l'Europe et l'Extrême-Orient devaient donc faire une escale de ravitaillement. La plupart des compagnies optaient pour une escale à Anchorage, en Alaska. Pour offrir aux voyageurs une alternative plus rapide, KLM a proposé à ses passagers de voler avec Aeroflot. Le transporteur national russe assurait des vols d'Amsterdam à Moscou, puis à Tokyo, au Japon. Ces vols étaient effectués avec les Iliouchine IL-62 quadrimoteurs russes. Bien que les pilotes soient fournis par Aeroflot, les équipages de cabine comprenaient en partie du personnel de KLM.  

Pour donner l'impression d'un véritable vol KLM, le logo KLM était apposé sur les IL-62 à la place du logo Aeroflot. C'était inhabituel dans les années 1970 de voir une telle collaboration entre deux compagnies aériennes, encore moins entre une compagnie occidentale et la compagnie nationale soviétique. KLM est l'une des rares compagnies occidentales à avoir eu son logo sur un avion fabriqué en Union soviétique.  

**À court terme**  
La collaboration s'est avérée peu fructueuse et a été arrêtée après quelques mois. Jusqu'à l'ouverture de l'espace aérien russe, KLM a continué à opérer des vols vers Tokyo et d'autres destinations via Anchorage. Aujourd'hui encore, la Russie n'autorise généralement qu'une seule compagnie par pays à survoler son territoire, et les compagnies doivent payer des frais élevés pour cela.

**Tijdens de Koude Oorlog**  
Europese luchtvaartmaatschappijen die naar het Verre Oosten (Japan) vlogen, mochten niet over het grondgebied van de Sovjet-Unie vliegen. De meeste maatschappijen kozen ervoor om via Alaska te vliegen, een langere en duurdere route. In 1971 sloot KLM echter een overeenkomst met de Sovjets. Gedurende een korte periode (slechts 4 maanden in 1971) was de blauwe KLM-opdruk te zien op Ilyushin IL-62-vliegtuigen. Maar waarom, midden in de Koude Oorlog, stond het KLM-logo op een Russisch vliegtuig? En waarom werden passagiers aan boord bediend door KLM-stewardessen?

**Luchtruim**  
Tijdens de Koude Oorlog sloot de Sovjet-Unie haar luchtruim voor westerse luchtvaartmaatschappijen. Vluchten tussen Europa en het Verre Oosten moesten daarom een tussenstop maken om te tanken. De meeste maatschappijen maakten een tussenstop in Anchorage, Alaska. Om reizigers de mogelijkheid te bieden sneller naar het Verre Oosten te vliegen, bood KLM passagiers de optie om met Aeroflot te vliegen. De Russische nationale luchtvaartmaatschappij vloog van Amsterdam naar Moskou en vervolgens naar Tokio, Japan. De vluchten werden uitgevoerd met het Russische viermotorige Ilyushin IL-62-vliegtuig. Hoewel de piloten van Aeroflot waren, werd het cabinepersoneel deels geleverd door KLM. Het was in de jaren 70 ongebruikelijk voor twee luchtvaartmaatschappijen om zo’n samenwerking aan te gaan, laat staan tussen een westerse maatschappij en de nationale luchtvaartmaatschappij van de Sovjet-Unie. Om de vlucht op een echte KLM-vlucht te laten lijken, werd het KLM-logo op de Il-62’s geplakt in plaats van het Aeroflot-logo. KLM is een van de weinige westerse luchtvaartmaatschappijen die ooit haar logo op een Sovjet-vliegtuig heeft gehad.

**Korte duur**  
De samenwerking bleek geen groot succes en werd na een paar maanden stopgezet. Tot de opening van het Russische luchtruim voerde KLM vluchten naar Tokio en andere bestemmingen in het Verre Oosten via Anchorage uit. Hoewel het lijkt alsof het Russische luchtruim net als dat van andere landen vrij toegankelijk is, is dat niet het geval. Rusland staat over het algemeen slechts één luchtvaartmaatschappij per land toe om over het land te vliegen. Luchtvaartmaatschappijen moeten ook flink betalen om over Rusland te mogen vliegen.

**Durante la Guerra Fría**  
Durante la Guerra Fría, las aerolíneas europeas que volaban hacia el este (Japón) no podían sobrevolar el territorio de la Unión Soviética. La mayoría de las aerolíneas tomaban la ruta más larga y costosa a través de Alaska. En 1971, KLM llegó a un acuerdo con los soviéticos. Durante un breve período (solo 4 meses en 1971), las letras azules de KLM se pudieron ver en los Ilyushin IL-62. Pero, ¿por qué, en medio de la Guerra Fría, estaba el logo de KLM en un avión ruso? ¿Y por qué los pasajeros eran atendidos por auxiliares de vuelo de KLM?

**Espacio aéreo**

**Während des Kalten Krieges**  
Europäische Fluggesellschaften, die in den Osten (Japan) flogen, durften nicht über sowjetisches Territorium fliegen. Die meisten Fluggesellschaften wählten die Route über Alaska, die länger und teurer war. 1971 traf KLM eine Vereinbarung mit den Sowjets. Für kurze Zeit (nur 4 Monate im Jahr 1971) konnte man die blauen KLM-Buchstaben auf Ilyushin IL-62 sehen. Aber warum war das KLM-Logo mitten im Kalten Krieg auf einem russischen Flugzeug? Und warum wurden Passagiere an Bord von KLM-Flugbegleitern betreut?

**Luftraum**  
Während des Kalten Krieges schloss die Sowjetunion ihren Luftraum für westliche Fluggesellschaften. Flüge zwischen Europa und Fernost mussten daher eine Tankpause einlegen. Die meisten Fluggesellschaften machten einen Zwischenstopp in Anchorage, Alaska. Um den Reisenden eine schnellere Verbindung in den Fernen Osten zu ermöglichen, bot KLM ihren Passagieren die Möglichkeit, mit Aeroflot zu fliegen. Die russische Staatsfluggesellschaft flog von Amsterdam nach Moskau und dann nach Tokio, Japan. Die Flüge wurden mit der russischen viermotorigen Ilyushin IL-62 durchgeführt. Während die Piloten von Aeroflot gestellt wurden, war das Kabinenpersonal teilweise von KLM. Es war in den 1970er Jahren ungewöhnlich, dass zwei Fluggesellschaften eine solche Partnerschaft hatten, insbesondere eine westliche Fluggesellschaft und die nationale Fluggesellschaft der Sowjetunion. Damit es wie ein echter KLM-Flug aussah, wurde das KLM-Logo auf die IL-62 geklebt, anstelle des Aeroflot-Logos. KLM ist eine der wenigen westlichen Fluggesellschaften, deren Logo jemals auf einem in der Sowjetunion gebauten Flugzeug angebracht wurde.

**Kurzfristig**  
Die Zusammenarbeit erwies sich als kein großer Erfolg und wurde nach einigen Monaten eingestellt. Bis zur Öffnung des russischen Luftraums führte KLM weiterhin Flüge nach Tokio und anderen Zielen im Fernen Osten über Anchorage durch. Auch wenn es so aussieht, als sei der russische Luftraum so offen wie der anderer Länder, ist dies nicht der Fall. Russland erlaubt in der Regel nur einer Fluggesellschaft pro Land, das Land zu überfliegen. Außerdem müssen Fluggesellschaften erhebliche Gebühren zahlen, um über Russland fliegen zu dürfen.

**Durante la Guerra Fredda**, le compagnie aeree europee che volavano verso l’Est (Giappone) non potevano sorvolare il territorio dell’Unione Sovietica. La maggior parte delle compagnie sceglieva una rotta più lunga e costosa passando per l’Alaska. Nel 1971, la KLM stipulò un accordo con i sovietici. Per un breve periodo (solo 4 mesi nel 1971), le lettere blu della KLM erano visibili sui velivoli Ilyushin IL-62. Ma perché, nel bel mezzo della Guerra Fredda, il logo KLM compariva su un aereo russo? E perché i passeggeri a bordo venivano serviti da assistenti di volo della KLM?

**Lo spazio aereo**  
Durante la Guerra Fredda, l’Unione Sovietica chiuse il proprio spazio aereo alle compagnie aeree occidentali. Pertanto, i voli tra l’Europa e l’Estremo Oriente dovevano effettuare una sosta per il rifornimento. La maggior parte delle compagnie faceva scalo ad Anchorage, in Alaska. Per offrire ai viaggiatori un’opzione più veloce per volare verso l’Estremo Oriente, i passeggeri KLM avevano la possibilità di volare con Aeroflot. La compagnia nazionale russa effettuava voli da Amsterdam a Mosca e poi a Tokyo, in Giappone. I voli erano effettuati con il quadrimotore russo Ilyushin IL-62. Mentre i piloti erano forniti da Aeroflot, parte dell’equipaggio di cabina era fornito dalla KLM. **Breve durata**  
La collaborazione non si rivelò un grande successo e fu quindi interrotta dopo pochi mesi. Fino all’apertura dello spazio aereo russo, la KLM continuò a operare voli per Tokyo e altre destinazioni dell’Estremo Oriente passando per Anchorage. Anche se potrebbe sembrare che lo spazio aereo russo sia aperto come quello della maggior parte degli altri paesi, non è così. La Russia generalmente permette a una sola compagnia per paese di sorvolare il proprio territorio. Inoltre, le compagnie devono pagare cifre considerevoli per avere il permesso di sorvolare la Russia.
