Le mot Gin vient du mot néerlandais Genever. Ce mot signifie Genévrier. Les premiers gins étaient élaborés avec du Barley Malt Grain Mash et des Junipier Berrys. Le gin a été utilisé pour la première fois comme médicament au XVIIe siècle par les Néerlandais.

Ces bouteilles sont appelées bouteilles de gin en caisse ou bouteilles de gin coniques. Ils ont été conçus pour emballer les bouteilles plus efficacement. Soit 6 à 24 bouteilles par caisse. Ces bouteilles de gin ont été fabriquées depuis les années 1600 jusqu'au 20ème siècle. La couleur commune de ces bouteilles est constituée de nuances de vert ou parfois appelées verre noir. Les couleurs claires et ambrées sont moins courantes et les bouteilles de gin au cobalt sont rares.
