Spécialement fabriqué pour la maison de vente à crédit J. Girard & Cie, le Ménestrel contient le mécanisme du phonographe Pathé le Gaulois. Le reproducteur fourni est un Rex de chez Pathé. Le nouveau modèle proposé en fin d'année 1902 est un Ménestrel peint en vert foncé, tel que celui en vente, et qui peut jouer les cylindres de 90 mm.
L'exclusivité de vente à crédit est concédée par Pathé frères aux établissements Girard et Cie. C'est pourquoi, en 1903, il est proposé des phonographes semblables à ceux qui sont vendus directement par Pathé.
