Rare Soviet Kursk Souvenir Chessmen – Limited Edition (1983, USSR)

This is a rare and highly collectible set of Soviet Kursk Souvenir Chessmen, produced in the Soviet Union in 1983. The chess pieces are designed in a 13th-century military style, reflecting the historical theme of Batu Khan’s sacking of Kursk. Batu Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan, led the Golden Horde, which is subtly represented in the design of the gold-coloured pieces.

The chessmen are hand-painted and cast from Carbolite, a dense and durable resin material, and rest on brown felt base pads. The King measures 3-7/8” (9.8 cm) tall with a 1-1/4” (3.2 cm) base, making the set substantial in weight and presence. The shield on the gold pieces bears a coat of arms similar to the present-day emblem of Kursk, though with different colours.

This limited edition set is in very good condition, with only minor paint chips visible. A must-have for chess collectors, Soviet memorabilia enthusiasts, and history buffs alike.
