Dit vroeg-19de-eeuwse beeld van Sint Franciscus wordt gekenmerkt door een ingetogen maar expressieve uitstraling. Het beeld toont Franciscus in een eenvoudige monnikspij, voorzien van diepe plooien die de stof op een realistische manier weergeven. Hij draagt een touwgordel, typerend voor de Franciscaanse orde. Zijn rechterhand hield waarschijnlijk een object vast  – mogelijk een crucifix, een boek, of een ander religieus symbool - dat belangrijk was in zijn leven en werk.

Het hoofd van Franciscus straalt kalmte en spiritualiteit uit, met een fijn gesneden gezicht en een baard. Het beeld staat op een decoratieve basis die lijkt te verwijzen naar een natuurlijke omgeving, passend bij Franciscus' verbondenheid met de natuur.

Hoewel het beeld grotendeels uit natuurhout bestaat, zijn er nog sporen van polychromie zichtbaar. Houtsoort is mogelijks eik.

Franciscus van Assisi (1181-1226) was erg onder de indruk van het leed van melaatsen en bekeerde zich na een visioen van Christus. Hij zwoer armoede, was bijzonder vroom en dienstbaar, en hechtte groot belang aan de natuur, die volgens hem weergaf hoe de Schepper voor de mens wil zijn.

Het sculptuur is in goede algemene staat met normale gebruikssporen. Merk de lichte schade op aan Franciscus' rechterhand. Onderaan voorzien van een label met 'Gent - Antiekbeurs van Vlaanderen - Sint Pietersabdij - 24april-3mei 1981'
