The Egils Saga (or Egils saga Skalla-Grímssonar) is one of the most famous and well-preserved of the Icelandic sagas, medieval narratives describing the lives of Norse heroes and their deeds. It was written in Old Norse around the 13th century, though it covers events from the 9th and 10th centuries during the heroic age of Viking colonization of Iceland.

The saga centers around Egil Skalla-Grímsson, a powerful Viking warrior and warlord. It chronicles his life, battles, voyages and grueling political relations, while also providing insights into Norse society, customs and beliefs.  Born into the powerful Skalla-Grím family, Egil is depicted as a complex figure, known for his violent temper, his remarkable intelligence and his poetic talent. 

A significant portion of the saga includes examples of Old Norse poetry, key to understanding the Viking worldview and the significance of reputation and vengeance in Norse culture. Egil's actions, feuds and alliances  - indeed often inspired by a sense of justice and honor - drive much of the plot forward. Throughout the saga, Egil interacts with several prominent kings, including King Eirik Bloodaxe and King Athelstan of England. His relationships with these figures range from alliance to open conflict, with Egil's political and military acumen often playing a critical role.

The 1930 English translation by E.R. Eddison is one of the early, notable versions. Eddison, an English scholar, offers a detailed background on the saga, providing context for the events and characters, as well as an analysis of the cultural significance of the work. Eddison not only makes the saga easily accessible to modern readers, but is also praised for his attempt to remain faithful to the spirit of the original Old Norse text. His language is rich and poetic, capturing the essence of the saga’s original style while  preserving the sense of grandeur and stoic fatalism that characterizes much of Norse literature.
