Trent Parke and Narelle Autio, who would later become Parke's wife, were chosen to document life on Australian beaches in early 1999, during one of the country's worst summers for drowning. In a project that spanned two years and beaches from Bondi in Sydney to Freshwater and Manly beaches, north to Bogie Hole in Newcastle, to Port Macquarie and Byron Bay, the couple's underwater shots built a portrait of an Australian pastime that it captured something of national identity, as well as something broader and universal about humanity's relationship with wild nature.
"The ocean is a symbol of supreme universal energy, something that gives and takes life," says Narelle Autio. “It can be calm and calm or violent and unpredictable. Despite the dangers and inevitable loss of life, the sea remains an irresistible attraction for millions of people. “We wanted to show this symbiosis between humanity and the ocean and our seemingly continuous need to return to the water.”
