Het fotoboek OWN biedt een compleet overzicht van het rijke fotografische oeuvre van Erwin Olaf.

Alle bekende series zijn vertegenwoordigd, van 'Chessmen' uit 1988 tot meer recente series als Rain, Hope, Grieve, Fall, Keyhole en Le Dernier Cri. Er zijn enkele mode- en reclamefoto's, maar de nadruk ligt op het vrije werk. In de prachtig gereproduceerde beelden wordt goed zichtbaar met hoeveel oog voor detail Olaf zijn modellen in interieurs heeft neergezet. Met zijn fotocamera toont hij zich een hedendaagse schilder van het menselijke tekort, die behalve bij oude meesters als Caravaggio, Vermeer en Hopper ook inspiratie vindt in films uit de jaren zestig en zeventig van Fellini, Kubrick en Pasolini.

Door de perfecte beheersing van licht en kleur ontstaan de gelaagde vertellingen die een sterk verlangen naar schoonheid reflecteren en nostalgische gevoelens oproepen naar een niet nader aangeduid verleden.

De bijna 190 foto's worden vooraf gegaan door twee korte interviews en inleidingen van Rudi Fuchs en Christoph Ruys. Achterin is een bibliografie opgenomen.
