17th century portrait of an elegant lady in an interior, with old attribution to Gerard Ter Borch II

Possibly the same work as the one with Kunsthandlung P. Rusch in 1928 as by Gerard Ter Borch

Gerard ter Borch II (1617–1681) was a prominent Dutch Golden Age painter, renowned for his refined and intimate genre scenes that captured the subtleties of domestic life, social interaction, and human emotion. Born in Zwolle, Netherlands, into an artistic family, he was the son of Gerard ter Borch the Elder, a painter and art collector who provided his early training.

Ter Borch’s career took him across Europe, including travels to England, Italy, and Spain, where he absorbed diverse influences that enriched his technique. He is best known for his meticulously rendered interior scenes featuring figures dressed in rich, silken fabrics — a hallmark of his work. His ability to depict textures, especially satin, with extraordinary realism brought him acclaim during his lifetime and beyond.

One of his most famous works, The Gallant Conversation (also known as The Paternal Admonition), exemplifies his talent for conveying psychological nuance through body language and expression. In addition to genre scenes, he painted portraits and diplomatic commissions, including his presence at the signing of the Treaty of Münster in 1648, a historic moment he commemorated in one of his paintings.

Gerard ter Borch’s legacy lies in his quiet mastery of composition and his sensitivity to the inner lives of his subjects. His influence can be seen in the works of later Dutch masters, including Johannes Vermeer. Today, his paintings are held in major museums worldwide, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Mauritshuis in The Hague, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

With frame (offered as a gift, stable and good antique condition with some marks) ca. 95 by 78 cms.

The painting is ready to hang. There is inpainting visible most notably in the face and arms under UV-light. The old frame is in good condition, with an age-related patina and will be offered to the buyer as a gift.
