Deze eerste druk van zijn boek uit 1935 werd uitgegeven enkele jaren voordat Adams zijn welbekende zone-systeem wereldkundig maakte. Volgens eigen zeggen is het een zo eenvoudig mogelijke introductie tot het fotograferen. Alle stappen die moeten worden doorlopen om een goede foto te maken komen aan bod en worden toegelicht aan de hand van ingeplakte zwart-wit autotypiën die er uitzien als echte foto's, maar dat helaas niet zijn .

Drieendertig van de 34 opnamen in het boek van 96 bladzijden zijn van Adams zelf en één opname werd gemaakt door Dorothea Lange. Bij de foto's staan veelal de details over de opname en het afdrukken vermeld.

Het boek heeft een harde kaft zonder stofomslag, is gebruikt en in redelijke staat. De kaft is met name in de hoeken beschadigd (zie foto's) en op twee bladzijden komt een naamstempel voor. De bladzijden zijn wat verkleurd, maar zonder enige aantekening of onderstreping en met name de foto's zien er heel goed uit.
