A propos du photographe :

Werner Bischof est né en Suisse en 1916. Il étudie la photographie auprès de Hans Finsler à l'École des Arts et Métiers de Zurich, sa ville natale, puis ouvre un studio de photographie et de publicité. En 1942, il devient pigiste pour le magazine Du , qui publie ses premiers grands reportages photographiques en 1943. Bischof acquiert une renommée internationale après la publication de son reportage de 1945 sur les ravages de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Au cours des années suivantes, Bischof voyagea en Italie et en Grèce pour le Secours Suisse, une organisation vouée à la reconstruction d'après-guerre. En 1948, il photographia les Jeux olympiques d'hiver de Saint-Moritz pour le magazine Life . Après des voyages en Europe de l'Est, en Finlande, en Suède et au Danemark, il travailla pour Picture Post , The Observer , Illustrated et Epoca . Il fut le premier photographe à rejoindre Magnum et à en devenir l'un des membres fondateurs en 1949.

Détestant la « superficialité et le sensationnalisme » du monde des magazines, il consacra une grande partie de sa vie professionnelle à rechercher l'ordre et la tranquillité dans la culture traditionnelle, ce qui ne lui valut pas la sympathie des rédacteurs en chef de la photographie en quête de sujets brûlants. Néanmoins, le magazine Life le chargea de couvrir la famine en Inde en 1951, et il travailla ensuite au Japon, en Corée, à Hong Kong et en Indochine. Les images de ces reportages furent utilisées par les plus grands magazines photographiques du monde entier.

À l'automne 1953, Bischof réalise une série de photographies couleur aux compositions généreuses des États-Unis. L'année suivante, il voyage au Mexique et au Panama, puis dans une région reculée du Pérou, où il réalise un film. Tragiquement, Bischof meurt dans un accident de la route dans les Andes le 16 mai 1954, neuf jours seulement avant la mort de Robert Capa, fondateur de Magnum, en Indochine.
