- Tamara de Lempicka (1898–1980) was a Polish-born painter who became one of the most recognizable figures of the Art Deco movement. Renowned for her bold, stylized portraits and depictions of modern, liberated women, her work epitomized the glamour, confidence, and elegance of the Roaring Twenties and early 1930s. Influenced by Cubism and Neoclassicism, Lempicka developed a distinctive style marked by sharp lines, sculptural forms, metallic color tones, and dramatic lighting.

Her subjects were often aristocrats, socialites, or herself projecting an image of power and sensuality. Lempicka’s art reflects both her cosmopolitan lifestyle and her defiant independence as a woman artist in a male dominated field.

One of her most iconic works is Autoportrait (Tamara in a Green Bugatti) (1929), created for the cover of the German fashion magazine Die Dame. In it, she portrays herself behind the wheel of a sleek green Bugatti, wrapped in a silver scarf, with a confident, defiant gaze. The image is not just a self-portrait it is a statement of female autonomy, speed, and modernity. The sharply angular composition and cool palette reflect her signature Art Deco aesthetic and help cement her image as a symbol of modern femininity.

Lempicka’s market value continues to rise, driven by the uniqueness of her style, her cultural relevance, and renewed global interest in female modernist artists.
