Sea Urchin - Fossilised shell - Echinodiscus cf. truncatus
Uncommon predated large sea urchin 'sand dollar'—echinoid on matrix.
This sea urchin was living peacefully on the seabed 4 million years ago when it was attacked and killed.
The cylindrical shape of drill holes, their small size acid-etching traces, and current biological knowledge suggest that these holes were produced by cassid gastropods.
The absolutely interesting thing is that the sea urchin had already survived another attack, probably caused by another gastropod without piercing the shell, up in the vicinity of the ambulacrum.
Fossils with traces of predation are very scarce and interesting.
Predation in progress, this complete large specimen shows beautiful details and fantastic natural coloration.
The specimen is natural on the matrix, not restored, not glued.
Echinodiscus cf. truncatus
Sea urchin is 11 x 9 cm
Found in Java, Indonesia
Pliocene
