German Nothosaurus vertebrae in matrix - Fossil bone (No Reserve Price)

German Nothosaurus vertebrae in matrix - Fossil bone (No Reserve Price)

Four fossil vertebrae of Nothosaurus in matrix – Middle Triassic, Heilbronn region, Germany.

This set includes four fossil vertebrae of the marine reptile Nothosaurus, each embedded in separate rock slabs from the Middle Triassic (Anisium–Ladinium) of the Heilbronn region in Baden-Württemberg. The fossils originate from a now extinct site, which was once part of an important fossil zone of the German Triassic. Since these exposures have not been accessible for many years, finds from there are considered to be exceptionally rare.

Each vertebra is individually present in its original matrix. One of the four plates was reassembled after a damage-related break; an edge was glued on another vertebra. The remaining pieces are intact. Despite these minor flaws, all specimens have a good overall appearance, with clearly recognizable vertebral morphology and typical preservation in fine-grained sedimentary rock.

The matrix, with careful mechanical preparation, offers the possibility of revealing additional accompanying fossils such as fish teeth or scales – this is quite typical for the fossil-bearing horizons around Heilbronn. However, other bone remains of larger vertebrates are unlikely. The plates are between 6 cm and 10 cm long and can be easily integrated into collections or further processed scientifically.

Find location: Heilbronn region, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

Formation: Middle Triassic (Anisium–Ladinium), probably Muschelkalk or Lettenkeuper.

Alter: approximately 242–237 million years

Condition: 4 individual plates, one of which is glued; a torn corner glued.

Size of the plates: 6–10 cm

Special features: rare origin from a no longer accessible fossil site.
