The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch "Snoopy" Limited Edition, also known as model 3578.51.00, is a remarkable timepiece that pays tribute to a historic moment in space exploration and a unique partnership with NASA. This limited edition watch was created to commemorate the "Silver Snoopy Award" that Omega received in 1970 for its crucial role in helping the Apollo 13 crew return safely to Earth after a critical in-flight emergency. Limited to just 5,441 pieces, the number reflects the duration of the Apollo 13 mission—142 hours, 54 minutes, and 41 seconds. The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch "Snoopy" Limited Edition features a 42mm stainless steel case with a black dial, and comes on a stainless steel bracelet with a folding buckle. Its functions include hours, minutes, small seconds, chronograph, and tachymeter, making it not only a collector’s item but also a functional and reliable timepiece. One of the most striking features of this special edition watch is the representation of the "Eyes on the Stars" patch, which appears on the subsidiary small seconds dial and is reverse-printed on the sapphire crystal caseback. This design element celebrates the connection between Omega and NASA’s commitment to space exploration and safety. The watch is powered by the calibre 1861. This movement upgrade includes rhodium plating.
But why was Snoopy chosen as NASA’s mascot? In 1968, NASA selected Snoopy, the beloved beagle from Charles Schulz's "Peanuts" comic strip, as an icon to emphasize mission success and serve as a 'watchdog' for flight safety. During the Apollo 13 mission, an oxygen tank explosion threatened the safety of the astronauts. The Omega Speedmaster watches worn by the crew played a vital role in the mission’s success, particularly in timing the critical engine burns required to bring the spacecraft back on course to Earth. The Speedmaster Snoopy Limited Edition celebrates this heroic moment in space history with its unique design elements and symbolic connection to NASA's values. That same year, NASA established the Silver Snoopy Award, a special honor awarded to NASA employees and contractors who demonstrate outstanding professionalism, dedication, and contributions to flight safety or mission success. Snoopy's affiliation with NASA dates back to the Apollo 10 mission, where Peanuts characters were used as call signs. Since the inception of the award, over 12,000 have been presented, including one to Omega for their involvement in the Apollo 13 mission.
