A propos du photographe :

Né à Oak Park, dans l'Illinois, en 1933, Bruce Davidson remporte le premier prix du concours national des lycées Kodak à l'âge de 16 ans. Il poursuit ses études au Rochester Institute of Technology et à l'université Yale.

Durant son service militaire à Paris, Davidson rencontre Henri Cartier-Bresson, l'un des fondateurs de Magnum Photos, et devient membre à part entière en 1958 (il est aujourd'hui contributeur). Après avoir quitté l'armée, il travaille comme photographe indépendant pour Life et, de 1958 à 1961, crée des œuvres phares telles que Circus , Brooklyn Gang et Freedom Rides . Il reçoit une bourse Guggenheim en 1962 et crée une documentation approfondie du mouvement des droits civiques en Amérique, publiée plus tard sous le titre Time of Change . En 1963, le Museum of Modern Art de New York présente ses premiers travaux dans une exposition personnelle.

La première bourse de photographie du National Endowment for the Arts a été accordée à Davidson en 1967. Il a passé deux ans à observer les conditions sociales désastreuses dans un pâté de maisons d'East Harlem et le livre qui en a résulté, East 100th Street , a été publié par Harvard University Press en 1970. Cette œuvre a fait l'objet d'une exposition la même année au Museum of Modern Art de New York, organisée par John Szarkowski.

En 1980, Davidson approfondit sa vision de la ville avec Subway , qui explore le métro new-yorkais et ses voyageurs souterrains. Son projet suivant, Central Park , est une rencontre de quatre ans (1992-1995) avec le magnifique espace vert de la ville, une convergence de l'humanité, de la nature et de la ville. Le film de Davidson Living off the Land a reçu le Critics Award du Festival du film américain. Henry Geldzahler, ancien conservateur de l'art moderne au Metropolitan Museum de New York, a déclaré : « La capacité à pénétrer avec autant de sympathie dans ce qui semble superficiellement un environnement étranger reste le triomphe constant de Bruce Davidson ; dans son enquête, il devient le témoin amical de la tendresse et de la tragédie. »

Davidson continue de vivre et de travailler à New York.
