This evocative landscape by Belgian painter Louis van Engelen portrays a quintessential Dutch scene: a towering windmill standing beside a red-roofed farmhouse along a serene riverbank. The artist likely captured the 1696-built tras and oil mill ‘Welgelegen,’ once located near Dordrecht but sadly demolished in 1965 (molendatabase.nl/molens/ten-bruggencate-nr-01270).

Painted with a keen eye for atmosphere and natural light, the work showcases Van Engelen’s characteristic blend of realism and mood. The soft, overcast sky and reflective waters highlight his mastery of brushwork and tone. A fine addition to any art collection. 

Artist biography:
Louis van Engelen (1856–1940) was a Belgian painter renowned for his realist depictions of urban life, landscapes, and genre scenes. Born in Lier, he studied at the local Drawing School before advancing to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he trained under Charles Verlat. 

Van Engelen collaborated on several large-scale panoramas, notably the "Panorama of Waterloo" (1880), "Panorama of Bapaume" (1881), and "Panorama of Moscow" (1882), working alongside Verlat and other artists. He frequently painted en plein air along the banks of the Scheldt and Rupel rivers, employing a precise, cool style with a clear color palette, often on large canvases. 

Throughout his career, van Engelen traveled extensively, including trips to Russia, North America, the Congo, and the Kerguelen Islands. He was a member of the artist group Als ik Kan and, in 1891, became one of the twelve founding members of the collective Les XIII. His works have been featured in various exhibitions and continue to be sought after by collectors, with notable sales such as "The Café Belvedere, Antwerp".
