First edition and printing of this wonderfully illustrated book, with 75 colour plates and folding map

A fascinating travel classic book in the original cloth bindings. The book is a well presented blend of descriptive and historical material. There are an appendix and 7 chapters described by William Reeves, High Commissioner for New Zealand.

The book is wonderfully illustrated with fold out map in colour at rear, and 75 striking full page colour plates, captioned on the tissue guards, by F. And W. Wright (Frank and Walter Wright taught and exhibited at Auckland's Victoria Arcade art school in the late 1880's along with Robert Atkinson, Charles Blomfield, E. W. Payton, Kennett Watkins, Louis John Steele and G. C. Goldie). 

Published by Adam and Charles Black, London 1908. Publisher’s original brown cloth, decorated with Maori and Tiki design, with gilt lettering on upper cover and spine. Top page edges gilt.

Condition
The book is beautifully designed and illustrated. Firm and well bound copy. External covers are faded, creases and marked, with light wear to corners, and at head and foot of spine. Internally the book is in very good condition. An inscription with neat ink on first front free blank endpaper page, and small bookseller’s sticker to rear past down page. Inner hinges are very good, and pages are tightly held at gutters. Pages are clean, with occasional marks to the margin of the few pages. The text is fresh. All colour plates are present as called for. The attractive illustrations make this a truly beautiful title (Please see pictures).
