This flambé-glazed porcelain vase from the Chinese Republic Period (circa early 20th century) is shaped in the classical double gourd form, an auspicious symbol in Chinese culture associated with longevity and protection. The body is finished in a striking flambé glaze, characterized by streaks of cherry red merging with lavender hues and subtle electric yellow splashes. The glaze runs vertically down the vase in an organic flow, a hallmark of traditional flambé techniques developed during the Qing dynasty and revived during the Republic period. The crackled celadon-gray glaze visible at the mouth and foot ring adds contrast and textural depth, and hints at intentional kiln-controlled crackling as a decorative feature. The unmarked base, with concentric double circles, is typical of Republic period revivalist wares that emulated Qing examples without imperial marks. Vases of this type, especially in smaller cabinet formats like this one (25.5 cm tall), were popular both in domestic settings and for export, often admired for their flamboyant colors and glossy finish. The condition appears excellent, with only minor glaze imperfections consistent with original firing.
