Selected Collection of 5 Different 1st Crusade Coins

A carefully curated selection of five distinct coins from the era of the First Crusade, representing both the monetary systems that financed the campaign and the coins struck in the Crusader states of the Holy Land.

Collection Includes:

1. Crusader States, Antioch – Bohemond III (Minority, Under Regents Constance & Renaud de Châtillon, 1149–1163 AD) – Rare Silver Denier
Weight: 0.79 g; Diameter: 16.2 mm; Alignment: 03h
Obverse: +BOHNVDVS, bare head facing right.
Reverse: +ANTOCHIA, cross pattée with a pellet in the upper left quadrant.
Historical Context: This coin was minted during Bohemond III’s minority, while his mother, Constance of Antioch, and stepfather, Renaud de Châtillon, ruled as regents.

2. Bishops of Valence – Crusader Silver Denier (1157-1276 AD)
Weight: 0.84 g; Diameter: 17.2 mm; Alignment: 11h
Obverse: VRBS VALENTIAI, stylized angel with spread wings resembling an eagle.
Reverse: S APOLLINARS, cross with annulet in one quadrant.
Historical Context: The Bishops of Valence ruled from the 4th century, and their coinage was widely used by Crusaders to fund religious wars in the Holy Land.

3. Feudal France – Bishops of Maguelonne (1080-1158 AD) – Silver Denier (Struck under Raimond, 1129-1158 AD)
Weight: 0.43 g; Diameter: 15.6 mm
Obverse: Cross formed by two mitres flanking a central bar.
Reverse: Cruciform pattern of annulets within a circle, with inscriptions around the perimeter.
Historical Context: Struck in Feudal France, this coin was used as currency by Crusaders traveling to the Holy Land, helping finance their journey.

4. Crusader States, Antioch (Principality) – Bohémond III AR Denier (1163-1201 AD)
Weight: 0.53 g; Diameter: 15.9 mm; Alignment: 07h
Obverse: ✠ BOANVHDVS, helmeted and chain-mailed bust facing left, crescent to left, star to right.
Reverse: ✠ A⚬ITIOCI⚬IIA, cross pattée with a crescent in the second angle.
Historical Context: Bohemond III, Prince of Antioch, was a key figure in Crusader politics, an adversary of Levon I of Armenia, and an enemy of Saladin while maintaining alliances with the Byzantine Empire.

5. Italy, King Henry III-V (1039-1125 AD) – Lucca AR Denaro
Weight: 0.7 g; Diameter: 16.2 mm
Obverse: IMPERATOR around monogram.
Reverse: HENRICVS LVCA around a central dot.
Historical Context: The Silver Denier of Lucca was highly valued throughout Europe and played a vital role in financing the First Crusade, as it was used to purchase supplies, pay ransoms, and compensate soldiers.
