The red sectors on the dial mark the "three minutes of radio silence" intervals – a crucial time when all transmissions ceased and radio operators listened exclusively for SOS distress signals in Morse code. This was an international maritime safety regulation, and such clocks were essential equipment in every ship’s radio cabin.
