Corneille (1922-2010) was een schilder en grafisch kunstenaar die begin jaren vijftig de conservatieve Nederlandse kunstwereld radicaliseerde. Samen met vijf andere invloedrijke kunstenaars, waaronder Karel Appel en Constant, richtte hij in 1948 de naoorlogse Europese expressionistische beweging CoBrA op. Corneille volgde tussen 1940 en 1942 cursussen tekenen en etsen aan de Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, maar wordt over het algemeen beschouwd als een autodidactische schilder. Aanvankelijk sterk beïnvloed door het werk van Picasso maakte Corneille abstract werk. Vanaf de late jaren zestig krijgt Corneille's werk een meer figuratief karakter. In dit werk zijn vogels, vrouwen en bloemen vaak het onderwerp.
