- Tamara de Lempicka (1898–1980) was a Polish-born painter and one of the most iconic artists of the Art Deco era. Known for her bold, sensual portraits and glamorous depictions of women, she emerged in the Parisian art scene during the 1920s and quickly gained fame among the elite for her distinctive style that fused cubist geometry with neoclassical elegance.

Her work is characterized by sharp lines, polished surfaces, and sculptural figures, often portraying women as confident, sensual, and self-possessed. Lempicka's art reflects the freedom, hedonism, and modernity of the Roaring Twenties, while also revealing her mastery of classical technique reimagined through a modernist lens.

La dormeuse ("The Sleeping Woman") is a sensual and serene portrait that exemplifies Lempicka’s ability to blend realism with stylization. The sleeping figure is rendered with luminous skin tones, curled golden hair, and softly closed eyes, embodying both vulnerability and glamour. The composition is intimate yet idealized, with a muted background that highlights the subject’s sculptural form and vibrant red lips and nails—hallmarks of Lempicka’s stylized female icons.

This work is a perfect example of her mastery in using light, shadow, and texture to elevate a moment of rest into a timeless, iconic image of feminine beauty.

Tamara de Lempicka’s market has risen significantly in recent decades, with collectors and museums eager to acquire her works. Her painting Portrait de Marjorie Ferry sold for $21.2 million in 2020, breaking her previous auction records. Other paintings from the 1920s and 30s, especially sensual portraits command prices between $1 million and $10 million..
