Saint George the Victorious (Saint George, George of Cappadocia, George of Lydda; Greek: Άγιος Γεώργιος) is a Christian saint, great martyr, the most revered saint of this name and one of the most famous saints in the Christian world. There are many versions of his life, both canonical and apocryphal. According to the canonical life, he suffered during the Great Persecution under the Emperor Diocletian and after eight days of severe torture in 303 (304) was beheaded. One of the most famous tales of his miracles is "The Miracle of the Serpent".
Apocryphal texts The earliest sources of apocryphal tales about Saint George include[3]: The Vienna Palimpsest (5th century); "The Martyrdom of George", mentioned in the Decree of Pope Gelasius (early redaction late 5th - early 6th centuries). Gelasius rejects the acts of martyrdom of Saint George as a heretical falsification and classifies George among the saints who are better known to God than to people; "The Acts of George" (Nessan Fragments) (6th century, found in 1937 in the Negev Desert). Apocryphal hagiography dates the martyrdom of George to the reign of a certain Persian or Syrian ruler Dadian. The Life of the Glorious Great Martyr George  by Theodore Daphnopatos, who lived in the 10th century, calls Dadian the toparch of Syria and the nephew of Emperor Diocletian. According to this apocrypha, Diocletian ordered the execution of George, Dadian demanded that the torture be intensified, and Maximian was also present. Also in the apocrypha of the holy great martyr Nikita Besogon , known since the 11th century, George is mentioned, “tortured by Dadian,” and it is asked whether he was the one who incited Nikita to destroy the golden pagan idols. The iconographic image of Nikita Besogon from this life, about the demon-devil he defeated, and Maximian’s repeated attempts to execute him by martyrdom, which were thwarted by miracles, is sometimes merged with the image of George. Apocryphal lives of George tell of his seven-year torment, three deaths and resurrections, nails being driven into his head, etc. George dies the fourth time, beheaded with a sword, and his tormentors suffer heavenly punishment. The martyrdoms of Saint George are known in Latin, Syriac, Georgian, Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopian and Arabic translations, which contain various details about the sufferings endured by the saint[3]. One of the best texts of his life is found in the Slavic Menaion.
