Compass Box has broken all the molds of the famous Scottish distillate, bringing to the fore a category that until the early 2000s lived in the shadow of single malts and blended scotch. Blended malt is in fact a whisky that is born from the assembly of only malt whiskies from different distilleries. John Glaser began playing with the bottles of his collection combined with the samples he had available for work, his first blends were made in the kitchen of his home in London and were assembled to create blends to give as gifts to friends and relatives. His has always been a creative and artistic approach, based on an innate talent worthy of the greatest noses in the world of whisky. From that kitchen, Compass Box blends have won the opinion of the greatest experts and today, after more than 20 years, Compass Box has a blending room in the heart of London, a team of more than 12 people and an aging warehouse in the heart of Scotland.

Compass Box first works with a range of partners in the US, France and Spain to source the finest oak for each whisky it produces. It then creates custom casks, experimenting with different toast levels. It then selects the finest whiskies from the best distilleries to create the blends. After blending, the blends are returned to casks and left for between six months and three years, before bottling, which is done unchill filtered and in its natural colour.

A sherried blended whisky from Compass Box, primarily made from whiskies from Benrinnes, Glen Moray and a distillery near Aberlour. Some Highland malt matured in toasted French oak casks adds complexity. Bottled at 46% ABV, unchill filtered and natural colour. Here is the breakdown of the blend:

26.9% single malt from a distillery near Aberlour, matured in new casks with oloroso sherry (11 month finish).

19.7% Glen Moray single malt, matured in new oloroso sherry casks (four year finish).

14.5% Benrinnes single malt, matured in old bourbon casks.

11.3% Glen Moray single malt, matured in new oloroso sherry casks (four year finish).

8.4% single malt from a distillery near Aberlour, matured in new oloroso sherry casks.

7.3% Highland malt, matured in custom French oak casks (heavy toast).

6.1% Teaninich single malt, matured in new sherry casks.

5.8% Glen Moray single malt, matured in refill casks (Spanish red wine barrels).
