Jimmy Nelson is a British-Dutch photographer renowned for his large-format portraits of indigenous and tribal communities worldwide. Born in 1967 in Sevenoaks, Kent, England, he spent his childhood traveling through Africa, Asia, and South America with his father, a geologist for Shell. At 17, he embarked on a two-year solo trek across Tibet, capturing photographs that later gained international acclaim through National Geographic. This journey marked the beginning of his deep engagement with remote cultures .

Nelson's most acclaimed project, Before They Pass Away (2013), involved photographing over 35 indigenous tribes across five continents using a vintage 4×5 camera. The project aimed to document cultures at risk of vanishing due to globalization, portraying them in a romanticized and dignified manner. While the work received praise for its aesthetic quality, it also faced criticism for presenting an idealized view of these communities .

In response to critiques, Nelson's subsequent project, Homage to Humanity (2018), sought to provide a more inclusive perspective by incorporating interviews and multimedia elements, allowing the subjects to share their own narratives .

Beyond his photographic endeavors, Nelson established the Jimmy Nelson Foundation in 2016. The foundation aims to preserve and celebrate cultural diversity through photography, education, and storytelling, supporting various projects that empower indigenous communities to share their stories and maintain their cultural heritage .


In 2022, Nelson shifted his focus to his adopted home country, the Netherlands, with the project Between the Sea & the Sky. This work highlights the rich regional identities and traditional dress of Dutch communities, showcasing his evolving interest in cultural preservation closer to home .
