19th Century Gilded Bronze Mantel Clock – Symbolic Design Featuring Chronos – France
Description:
A beautifully crafted 19th-century mantel clock made of gilded, weathered bronze, richly adorned with allegorical symbolism and fine detail. This striking timepiece stands as both a functional clock and a philosophical piece of art, embodying themes of time, mortality, and classical mythology.

The upper portion features a detailed relief of Chronos, the ancient Greek personification of time, depicted with a stern expression, surrounded by scrollwork. Crowning the piece is a goblet of fire, symbolizing the inevitable passage of time — the slow burning away of our hours and days.

The central dial features a highly decorative black and bronze motif with white enamel Roman numerals in cartouches. The base and sides are intricately pierced and sculpted with scrolls, foliage, and lion paw feet, all reinforcing the grandeur of the piece.
