DESCRIPTION: 

For André Lhote, landscape was, along with the figure, the great subject of painting. In his treatise on the subject, written in 1939, he stated that landscape painting was much more complex than historical painting—which was traditionally better regarded—given the difficulty of resolving the problems of light, atmosphere, and the representation of space, all of which, once resolved through geometry and sensitivity, allowed for an incomparable lyrical expressiveness.

Lhote's language was always characterized by the geometric construction of composition; calculation and organization were the main foundations of his painting. This is why, in works like the one analyzed here, seemingly far removed from the Cubism of his early period, concepts linked to that movement, such as "organized nature" and the play of flat colors, are preserved. Lhote placed Cubism at the service of his main interest, the "lyrical deformation" of reality. Thus, in this painting, we appreciate the geometric organization of the composition, broken down into planes in the Cubist style (fig. 1), but at the same time, we notice the rhythmic play of colors alternating warm and cool tones, learned from Cézanne, as well as the use of a dynamic, directional, impasto brushstroke that departs from the polished Cubist finish but was a constant in Lhote's work for most of his life (fig. 2).

Another of Lhote's great concerns was the expressive representation of atmosphere through the study of light. In this oil painting, the shadows are constructed from dark but never black tones, in the Post-Impressionist style. As in Landscape in the Drôme (fig. 3), a work belonging to his so-called "Baroque period" of the 1930s, the play of contrasts between ochres and violets becomes a fundamental constructive element, imbuing the depicted space with energy, spirit, and vitality.
