- M.C. Escher (1898–1972) was a Dutch graphic artist best known for his mathematically inspired artworks, which often depict impossible constructions, explorations of infinity, and complex geometric patterns. He combined art with mathematics in a way that created optical illusions and paradoxical scenes, captivating viewers with intricate perspectives and spatial ambiguity. His works have had a significant influence on both art and mathematics, particularly in the areas of geometry, topology, and visual perception.

Escher's art frequently features tessellations, infinite loops, and distorted realities where perspectives and dimensions shift unexpectedly. Some of his most famous works include "Relativity", "Drawing Hands", and "Ascending and Descending". His prints and lithographs are highly prized in the art market today, with his original pieces and limited editions fetching substantial sums at auctions.

"High and Low" (1947), is a striking example of Escher’s exploration of perspective and architecture. It shows multiple levels of buildings and staircases, where the orientation of the structure seems to shift from one level to the next, giving the impression of looking both up and down at the same time. This manipulation of spatial dimensions plays with the viewer’s sense of reality, creating an illusion where the standard rules of perspective no longer apply.

Escher's works, particularly those like "High and Low," continue to be highly sought after, with some prints selling for tens of thousands of dollars at auction. His unique blend of art, mathematics, and illusion has made him one of the most celebrated and recognizable graphic artists in the world.
