- Wine/Cellar History: Château Petrus is a monument of world winemaking and boasts a record in the entire Bordeaux area: that of prices.
Petrus usually leaves the cellar at prices that other producers cannot afford to apply, and prices normally increase further over time.
Despite this, it does not have a very long history behind it. The Petrus estate only took shape in 1920, when Madame Loubat, of the Hôtel Loubat in Libournes, purchased a share of land in Pomerol, an area at the time considered second-class for viticulture and consisting of only 7 hectares of vineyards. In 1940 she became the sole owner.
From the very beginning, however, the great potential of Château Petrus wines was evident, to the point that in 1964, the famous négociant Jean Pierre Moueix became co-owner of the winery.
