A propos du photographe :

Edouard BOUBAT, reporter photographe, « le poète humaniste »

Naissance : Edouard Boubat est né à Paris le 13 septembre 1923.

Après une enfance à Montmartre, il entre à l’école Estienne en 1937, dans la section photogravure, il y découvre la photographie et réussit son CAP de fin d’études en juillet 1942.

Au début de l’année 1943, il est envoyé à Leipzig en Allemagne au service de travail obligatoire (STO) dont il sera libéré en avril 1945.

 De 1945 à 1950 : De retour à Paris, il s’achète son premier appareil photo : un Rollei (6x6) en vendant ses dictionnaires.

Il fait les premières photographies des amies de sa sœur, Lella et Seguis, sur les quais de Seine à Paris.

Il vivra avec Lella durant quatre années, de son retour à Paris en mai 1945 à la fin de l’année 1949, ce que Lella a toujours considéré comme « Une aventure poétique. » C’est en 1947, lors d’un séjour en Bretagne, qu’il fera le fameux portrait de Lella, qui reste à ce jour la photographie la plus connue et emblématique de son œuvre.

En 1946, il photographie « La petite fille aux feuilles mortes », au jardin du Luxembourg et obtient le prix Kodak en 1947.

En 1949, au Salon de la Bibliothèque Nationale, où il partage un prix avec Robert Doisneau, il rencontre Brassaï et Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank et Eugène Smith.

En 1950, il photographie « L’arbre et la poule », son travail est publié pour la première fois dans la revue US Camera.

 En 1951, il rencontre Sophie qui devient sa femme, en 1958 ils auront un fils « Bernard ».

De 1951 à 1969 : Delpire l’invite à participer en 1951 à une exposition à la librairie La Hune, aux côtés de Brassaï, Doisneau, Facchetti et Isis. À cette occasion, Bertie Gilou directeur artistique du magazine mensuel « Réalités » remarque son travail et l’engage au journal jusqu’en 1969, il voyagera dans le monde entier pour réaliser ses reportages.

 De 1970 à 1999 : Il devient photographe indépendant en 1970 et intègre l’agence Rapho.

Il est l’invité d’honneur des rencontres internationales de la photographie d’Arles en 1971.

En juin 1971, Jacques Prévert à écrit: « Dans les terres les plus lointaines, Boubat cherche et trouve des oasis. C’est un correspondant de paix. »

En 1974, Il rencontre de nombreux artistes, dont Marguerite Duras, avec laquelle il collabore pour le film India Song. Il travaille également avec des écrivains tels que:

Jacques Prévert, Antoine Blondin, Michel Tournier et Christian Bobin.

Il continue de voyager en choisissant les pays et les thèmes de ses reportages.

Son oeuvre est reconnue de son vivant grâce à de nombreuses expositions partout dans le monde, Il a également fait plus de 20 livres de photos sur son travail.

 Décès : Il nous a quitté le 30 juin 1999 à Paris, et repose au cimetière du Montparnasse.

 
Prix : 

1947: prix Kodak / 1971: médaille David Octavius Hill.

1984 : Grand Prix national de la photographie. / 1988 : le Prix de la Fondation Hasselblad.

1985 devient officier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres puis commandeur en 1997.

 
En 2004 : sortie d’une monographie: « Edouard BOUBAT » aux éditions de La Martinière réalisée par son fils Bernard, comportant l’essentiel de son oeuvre, 300 photos ainsi que ses plus beaux textes, promu meilleur livre d’art de l’année 2004: prix Bernier de l’académie des Beaux-Arts de l’institut De France.
