Obverse:
The central field bears the Kalima — the Islamic declaration of faith — inscribed in three horizontal lines:
"La ilaha illa Allah, wahdahu la sharika lahu"
("There is no god but God alone, He has no partner").
The marginal inscription around the field includes the mint name “Wasit” and the date “AH 121”, finely rendered in Kufic script.
Reverse:
The central area features Surah al-Ikhlas (Qur’an 112) in four lines:
(“Say: He is God, One; God, the Eternal; He neither begets nor is born; and there is none like unto Him”).
The marginal legend quotes from Surah al-Tawbah (9:33):
"He it is Who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, to make it prevail over all religion..."

Historical Background:
Caliph Hisham ibn 'Abd al-Malik (r. AH 105–125 / AD 724–743) was the 10th Umayyad caliph and ruled during a period of relative stability and prosperity for the empire. Hisham is often regarded as one of the more capable Umayyad rulers, known for his administrative efficiency, patronage of the arts, and support for religious scholarship.
Wasit, the mint city, was founded in the late 7th century by al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf, the powerful Umayyad governor of Iraq. Strategically located on the Tigris River between Kufa and Basra, Wasit became one of the most important administrative and military centers in the eastern provinces. The mint at Wasit was prolific, producing a large number of silver dirhams throughout the Umayyad and early Abbasid periods. Its coins are particularly noted for their elegant and consistent Kufic inscriptions.
The date AH 121 (AD 738/9) falls toward the later years of Hisham’s reign, a time when the Umayyad state was beginning to face increased internal dissent and military pressures — particularly from the Berber Revolt in North Africa and the growing resentment of non-Arab Muslims (mawali). Despite these challenges, coin production continued vigorously, symbolizing both the religious legitimacy and political reach of the caliphate.
