 In good condition.
 Inside made with hand made paper. First edition of this illustrated edition. Limited to 1000 copies of which this is number 197. Externally very good grey cloth boards with gilt titling to spine all in very good order save very minor blemishes. Internally really tight, clean and in fabulous condition with no foxing, marks or inscriptions. xxxix preliminaries. Pages are uncut and a little foxed to the margins. 10.5"x6.5" Illustrated with 25 illustrations on wood by George Cruikshank from the collection of Edwin Truman, whose facsimile signature is reproduced on the half title. A really lovely, scarce and collectible book.
The bulk of Cruikshanks Pilgrim's Progress drawings originally went unpublished, instead collected by his friend Edwin Truman, until Truman decided to release this edition.


Edwin Truman (1818-1905) was dentist to the royal household, an inventor of new methods in dentistry, and a notable book collector. "He took a special interest in collecting Cruikshank's satirical prints and caricatures as well as books illustrated by him, eventually forming the largest first-generation collection of his works"
