Published during Brazil’s military dictatorship (1964–1985), Amazônia was not just a work of art—it was a bold act of resistance. The book critically addressed the deforestation, government exploitation of indigenous lands, and the displacement of the Yanomami people. Andujar’s photography went beyond documentation; it was a plea for awareness and action, making Amazônia a key piece in the fight for human rights and environmental conservation.

The controversial nature of the book led to severe pushback from the Brazilian authorities. The publisher, Editora Praxis, was raided, and many copies of Amazônia were confiscated, as the government sought to suppress works that criticized its policies. Despite these challenges, the book survived as a symbol of resistance, and Andujar would later dedicate her life to advocating for Yanomami land rights, playing a key role in their official land demarcation.

Provenance:

This photo book was originally signed in December 1981 in New York City, where the original owner— a personal friend of both Andujar and Love—met with the photographers. The owner, a passionate collector of photography and art books, maintained a long-standing friendship with the photographers and assembled an impressive private library over several decades.

In June 2025, the book was donated as part of a larger collection to a charity held at the Westport Library in Westport, Connecticut, USA. It was acquired directly from this sale. The volume is complete with its original slipcase and stands out not only for its rarity and condition but also for its direct connection to the artists through personal association and original inscription.
