Tsugaru / Liaoji Sensei Gyoshiki” is a collection of works by Ryoji Akiyama, one of Japan's leading postwar photographers. 36 years after the publication of ‘你好小朋友 (1983),’ a masterpiece featuring Chinese children that was published in the early 1980s and has since been lost, Ryoji Akiyama is still fresh in our memories. His other famous work is “New York Correspondence (1980),” also in color, but this book is his first and representative work published in the 1970s, and was published the following year. In the “Asahi Camera” May 1977 issue, he had a father-son talk with his father, Celadon Akiyama, who was also a photographer and a writer on photography, in which they talked about the background of the production. In the interview, Akiyama also mentions the influence of Ichiro Kojima, the famous photographer of “Tsugaru,” but their styles are relative. Kojima depicts the splendor of “(natural) landscapes,” while Akiyama depicts the interest of “(human) landscapes” created by the culture and climate of Tsugaru. The fact that the book was published by a local publisher, Tsugaru Shobo, is a testament to Akiyama's personality and the excellence of his work.
