A sultry, surreal original darkroom print from Michael Joseph, one of Britain’s most stylistically instinctive fashion and portrait photographers. Titled Jacuzzi James, this intimate early-90s photograph is suffused with both sensuality and technical curiosity.

The image was made during a period when Joseph — known for the Rolling Stones' Beggars Banquet shoot — found himself less constrained by commercial deadlines. By the early ’90s, younger photographers were in vogue, and assumptions about his fees led to fewer briefed commissions and, paradoxically, more creative freedom.

This print is a rare example of his improvisational darkroom work: a deliberate or possibly accidental double exposure lends the male subject — posed languidly in a Clapham jacuzzi — a near-spectral quality. You see him from behind, but the faint trace of his front seems to shimmer over his shoulders. It's subtly erotic, gently disorienting, and totally intriguing.

The effect invites you to imagine more than you see — a classic example of photography as fantasy. Rather than overstate, Joseph lets the viewer fill in the blanks: skin, steam, posture and suggestion doing all the work. In the world of London’s elite modelling agencies, beauty was hyper-filtered — and James (labelled “Beauty / Actor” on the reverse) was no exception. This portrait captures his physical elegance and quiet confidence, but adds a ghosted layer of mystery.

Printed by the artist on warm-toned photographic paper, framed in a richly decorative copper-painted moulding, and sealed at the rear with characteristic orange tape — plus Joseph’s own portrait sticker and handwritten cast reference.
