This 1901 edition of A Handbook of British Birds by J.E. Harting is a richly detailed and practical ornithological guide, long respected for its clarity and precision in cataloguing British avifauna at the turn of the century. It has exquisitely executed fine binding, far more elaborate than standard editions—suggesting it was specially commissioned, likely for a private library of distinction. This was likely of the library of Eric Penn, whose bookplate is pasted on the front cover. There is wear to the cover. Internally, there is foxing and discoloration, most noticeably on the front endpapers, though it does not affect the legibility or integrity of the text. This makes for good antiquarian condition. A remarkable book of scientific rigor.
