Eppo Doeve (geboren in 1907) was een beroemd (Indonesisch) illustrator en cartoonist die zijn jeugd onder Nederlands koloniaal bestuur doorbracht in zijn geboorteland, maar tijdens zijn volwassen leven grotendeels in Nederlands woonde. Hij was een politiek cartoonist en illustreerde vele boekcovers, advertenties en Nederlandse bankbiljetten. Doeve ontwikkelde ook een gerenommeerde reputatie als schilder. 

Hij maakte verschillende illustraties voor het blad van het Wagenische Studentencorps. Helaas vond in 1929 de Beurscrash op Wall Street plaats, met een zware wereldwijde economische crisis als gevolg. De Grote Depressie veroorzaakte ook de instorting van de Indonesische theemarkt, wat Doeve's levenspad volledig veranderde. Gezien zijn liefde voor Nederland wilde hij er blijven en koos daarom voor een grafische carrière. Hij had al wat klussen gedaan voor het Amsterdamse advertentiebureau De la Mar en bleef ook nu advertenties voor hen te illustreren.

In 1933 werd Doeve een politiek cartoonist voor het blad De Groene Amsterdammer. Na drie jaar verhuisde hij als freelancer naar De Haagsche Post. Zijn illustraties verschenen eveneens in De Radiobode, het officiële blad van de Nederlandse radio-omroep AVRO. Eén van zijn collega's aldaar was Eelco ten Harmsen van der Beek, van wie hij een heleboel waardevolle vaardigheden leerde. Doeve illustreerde afgewisseld met Henk Gijsbers en Henk Albers de 'Paul van Vlaanderen' reeks. Zijn grafische werk verscheen ook in Het Handelsblad en De Telegraaf, en na de Tweede Wereldoorlog verder in Vrij Nederland. Zijn langste samenwerking was met Elseviers Weekblad (later Elsevier), waarvoor hij van 1946 tot zijn dood in 1983 cartoons maakte.

Doeve ontwierp muurschilderingen, toneelsets en kostuums, postzegels, portretten, schilderijen en beeldhouwwerken. Hij maakte prachtige advertentieposters voor verschillende bedrijven. Twee van de beroemdste waren de ober die een serveerblad met Heineken bier draagt en een tekening met pinguins voor de Amsterdamse dierentuin Artis. Doeve's tekeningen fleurden de covers van vele Prisma pocketromans op. Toch kenden de meeste Nederlanders tijdens de jaren 1950 hem als de ontwerper van een nieuwe reeks briefgeld. Elk bankbiljet toonde het hoofd van een beroemd historisch figuur uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis, zoals Hugo De Groot (10 gulden), Herman Boerhaave (20 gulden), Christiaan Huygens (25 gulden), Desiderius Erasmus (100 gulden) en Rembrandt van Rijn (1000 gulden). Later in zijn leven ontwierp Doeve zelfs parodieën op deze briefjes met de hoofden van voetbalkampioen Johan Cruyff of Zwarte Piet. Doeve was een buitengewoon grafisch talent, ondanks het feit dat hij nooit naar de kunstacademie was geweest. Hij was ambidexter en kon zelfs, indien nodig, ondersteboven tekenen. Doeve ontving zoveel opdrachten dat hij zich nooit zorgen hoefde maken over zijn inkomen. Het enige nadeel was dat hij meestal voor andere mensen werkte, in plaats van eigen werk te maken.


Als striptekenaar bedacht hij twee tekststrips ('Het Mannetje Bagatel', 1946, en 'Kleine Isar, de Vierde Koning', 1962), op tekst van romanschrijver Bertus Aafjes. De veelzijdige tekenaar kon rekenen op veel waardering van collega's, hoewel hij nooit enige academische kunstopleiding had genoten. 
In 1946 verscheen hun sprookjesstrip 'Het Mannetje Bagatel' in De Volkskrant. Het liep van 4 juni tot 7 oktober 1946 (vanaf 17 september onder de titel 'Bagatel's Kinder-cabaret').

Vrij ongewoon voor een autodidact won hij ook verschillende prijzen voor zijn werk. In 1955 ontving hij de National Outdoor Advertising Award en in 1973 werd hij geridderd in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau.

Doeve overleed op 11 juni 1981 op 73-jarige leeftijd. Hij stond in hoog aanzien onder collega-artiesten en had een sterke invloed op mensen als Marten Toonder, Rudy van Giffen, Jan Kruis, Martin Lodewijk, Peter van Straaten en Fiep Westendorp. Voor geïnteresseerden in zijn leven en carrière is het boek 'Ter Herinnering Eppo Doeve' (1907-1981) door Jop Euwijk warm aanbevolen.

Deze kavel bevat een originele dagstrook uit Het mannetje Bagatel, een van de slechts twee tekststripverhalen die Doeve maakte. De dagstrook is prachtig getekend in de herkenbare stijl die Eppo Doeve zo typeerde. Originele striptekeningen van Eppo Doeve zijn extreem zeldzaam.
