Scientific name: Protopsephurus liui Grande & Bemis, 1991

This specimen represents Protopsephurus liui, one of the earliest known members of the paddlefish family (Polyodontidae), dating to approximately 125 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous (Barremian stage), and discovered in the Yixian Formation of western Liaoning, China.

As an ancestral form of modern paddlefish—including both the extinct Chinese paddlefish (Psephurus gladius) and extant North American paddlefish (Polyodon spathula)—Protopsephurus exhibits characteristic features such as an elongated rostrum, streamlined body, well-preserved vertebrae, fin rays, and dermal head shields. Its exceptional preservation provides critical insight into early acipenseriform evolution, paleoecology, and the biogeographic history of paddlefish lineages.
