Producer: Ruffino is a well-established and large producer in Tuscany, known for its consistent quality and traditional approach to winemaking, particularly with Chianti.

Riserva Ducale: This designation means the wine has undergone extended aging (a minimum of 24 months in wood and 3 months in bottle for a Chianti Classico Riserva). This extra aging is designed to create a more complex and age-worthy wine than standard Chianti Classico.

Grapes: Primarily Sangiovese (typically around 80%), blended with complementary grapes like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Overall Quality: The 1993 vintage in Tuscany was generally considered good, though somewhat "erratic" in certain areas. It wasn't a universally "great" vintage like 1990 or 1997, but it certainly produced some very good wines, especially those from well-managed vineyards and producers.

September was largely sunny, which helped with ripening.

However, heavy rains struck in October, particularly affecting the northern parts of Chianti. Most producers had brought in the majority of their grapes before these late rains.

Wine Characteristics from 1993: The fruit was generally healthy, with average sugar levels and, for Sangiovese, slightly higher acidity than some recent years. This led to wines that were described as having a classic Sangiovese character, often with a firm and slightly "nervy" (meaning lively, with good acidity) structure, but also good fruit and aroma. The best wines of the vintage were often the Chianti Riservas, which benefited from extra concentration and bottle aging potential. Some suggested the wines were a little austere in their youth but intense and interesting on the nose.
