Vitra - Charles & Ray Eames - Chair - Elephant, Design Object - plastic

In excellent condition, a sculpture, stool, and children's chair in one, from the Vitra brand and designed by Charles & Ray Eames in the United States of America. The item is white in color, and on top bears the official Vitra emblem, and on the bottom the decorative object is signed.

This Vitra elephant was originally designed in the early 1940s by Charles and Ray Eames. By the time Charles and Ray Eames spent many years developing and refining a technique for bending three-dimensional forms from plywood. Over time they designed a range of furniture and sculptures. Of all those original designs, the two-piece elephant proved to be the greatest technical challenge due to its strong multiple curves. The techniques of the time were not able to realize mass production of the elephant. The 14-year-old Lucia Eames, Charles’s daughter, received a prototype that was later loaned for an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946. This prototype is still in the possession of the Eames family.

In the early 2000s, the Eames Elephant was released in plastic, making it available to the originally intended audience: children. In this way, the elephant can be used as an iconic design piece but also as a toy.
