Les Djennenké, immigrés sur le plateau de Bandiagara vers 1475, furent sans doute à l’origine de l’adoption de ce mode de transport par les Dogon autochtones. Depuis, le cheval a inspiré les sculpteurs de la falaise qui ont gravé son image dans tous les matériaux, à des époques différentes, dans des styles et sur des supports tres variés. L’animal est une incarnation du Nommo, fils de dieu, sacrifié et ressuscité, descendu sur terre dans une arche5 (aduno koro) en compagnie des huit ancêtres primordiaux de l’humanité. Il est souvent representé avec son cavalier, le Hogon, « grand prêtre naturel des esprits ancestraux […] autrefois son pouvoir était absolu comme grand chef politicien, justicier et religieux. »6 Un large consensus est depuis réuni pour faire de ce Hogon le cavalier représenté sur le couvercle de la coupe étudiée ici et son utilisateur exclusif, en particulier lors de cérémonies impliquant un partage d’aliments.
