Eiko Yamazawa

Born in Osaka in 1899, Eiko Yamazawa was a pioneering female photographer. Her photobook Far and Near. After studying Japanese painting at Tokyo Women's College of Fine Arts, she went to study at the California School of Fine Arts, majoring in oil painting. Simultaneously, she studied photography under photographer Consuelo Kanega. Upon returning to Japan, she opened a studio specializing in portraits. Her clientele reportedly included prominent business and cultural figures like Keizo Saji of Suntory and architect Togo Murano. She later returned to America to further her photographic studies. Several years after coming back to Japan, she closed her studio, abandoned commercial photography, and dedicated herself to free artistic creation. This book primarily features photographs taken in the late 1950s, representing a volume created during her transition from commercial photographer to artist. It is an artistic volume by a pioneering female photographer, ranging from tender portraits and snapshots to richly designed plates showcasing exceptional formative power, and culminating in the color-centric “abstract” works that became Yamazawa's signature. The book design is by her disciple, Kazuko Hamachi.
