This large-format photographic print captures The Umbrellas, California (1991), one of the most ambitious environmental art installations by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Spanning two continents simultaneously—Japan and the United States—this temporary project consisted of 3,100 large yellow and blue umbrellas erected across vast landscapes, symbolizing both cultural individuality and global unity. The Californian segment, depicted in this striking photograph by Wolfgang Volz, featured 1,760 vibrant yellow umbrellas set against the dramatic hillsides of Southern California.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude are internationally acclaimed for their large-scale temporary installations that alter landscapes and cityscapes with dramatic effect. Their oeuvre includes iconic works such as Wrapped Reichstag (Berlin), The Gates (New York), Running Fence (California), and The Pont Neuf Wrapped (Paris). This work reflects their signature aesthetic and conceptual rigor, standing in dialogue with artists such as Robert Smithson, Walter De Maria, James Turrell, Michael Heizer, Nancy Holt, and other pioneers of Land Art. Their projects also resonate with the conceptual and site-specific practices of artists like Richard Long, Andy Goldsworthy, Olafur Eliasson, Anish Kapoor, and Yayoi Kusama, as well as with European contemporaries including Panamarenko, Jan Dibbets, Ger van Elk, Joseph Beuys, Günther Uecker, Klaus Rinke, and Wolfgang Laib. Christo’s Bulgarian roots also connect his work to artists such as Svetlin Roussev and Nedko Solakov, who explored spatial and political dimensions in Eastern European art.


Condition:
Very good, colors are vibran. Tiny creases on the corners. Paper is clean and well-preserved. Very large and impactful presentation.
