A propos du photographe :
William Eugene Smith est né en 1918 à Wichita, au Kansas. Il prend ses premières photos à l'âge de 15 ans pour deux journaux locaux. En 1936, Smith entre à l'Université Notre Dame de Wichita, où une bourse photographique lui est spécialement réservée. Un an plus tard, il quitte l'université et part pour New York. Après avoir étudié avec Helene Sanders au New York Institute of Photography, il commence à travailler pour News-Week (plus tard Newsweek ) en 1937. Licencié pour avoir refusé d'utiliser des appareils photo moyen format, il rejoint l'agence Black Star comme pigiste.

Smith travailla comme correspondant de guerre pour le magazine Flying (1943-1944), puis un an plus tard pour Life . Il suivit l'offensive américaine contre le Japon, d'île en île, et subit de graves blessures en simulant des conditions de combat pour Parade, ce qui nécessita une intervention chirurgicale pendant les deux années suivantes.

Une fois rétabli, Smith travailla de nouveau pour Life entre 1947 et 1955, avant de démissionner pour rejoindre Magnum Photos en tant qu'associé. En 1957, il devint membre à part entière de Magnum. Smith était passionnément dévoué à sa mission de photographe. En raison de ce dévouement, il était souvent considéré par les rédacteurs en chef comme « gênant ».

Un an après son installation à Tucson pour enseigner à l'Université de l'Arizona, Smith décède d'un accident vasculaire cérébral. Ses archives sont conservées au Centre de photographie créative de Tucson, en Arizona. Aujourd'hui, l'héritage de Smith perdure grâce au Fonds W. Eugene Smith, créé en 1980 pour promouvoir la « photographie humaniste », qui récompense des photographes pour leurs réalisations exceptionnelles dans ce domaine.
