Maternite Phemba - Kongo / Yombe - RDC Zaire
Les représentations de "maternité" du Mayombe et de la région cotière du pays Kongo sont parmi les plus séduisantes de l'art africain en raison de leur thème universel, de leur naturalisme et de leur perfection formelle.

Ces statuettes étaient appelées Pfemba ou Phemba.

Elles étaient utilisées dans le cadre d'un culte de fécondité féminine instaurée par une sage-femme.

Les différentes oeuvres montrent souvent des femmes en train d'allaiter.

Selon Lehuard (page 121 de "la maternité dans l'Afrique noire" G. Massa éditions Sépia) les enfants dont les jambes sont raides sont morts, alors que les vivants auraient les jambes pliées au niveau des genoux.
La statuette mettrait en scène une femme de chef présentant à son mari, leur premier enfant vivant ou mort-né, ou décédé peu après la naissance.

Marc Léo Félix dans son livre Kongo page 85, nous apprend que ces statuettes seraient à l'éffigie de la fondatrice du clan ou d'une femme régnante.
Ces objets étant la propriété du chef.

D'autres sources mentionnent que ces statues étaient utilisées frottées d'un enduit végétal rouge agissant comme agent médiateur entre les états transitoires de naissance et de décès
