Ruiko Yoshida - Harlem: Black Angels - 1974-2010

Ryuko Yoshida (July 10, 1934 – May 31, 2024) Sanctuary Publishing / 2010 / Japanese "Harlem Black Angels" is a photo book by Ryuko Yoshida, a Japanese female photographer. A journalist by profession, Yoshida focused on themes such as racial discrimination, children, and women, producing works that combined photography and text. After graduating from Keio University, she worked as an announcer for NHK and TBS before moving to the United States. She studied photojournalism at Columbia University, where she began her career as a photographer. In New York, she made her home in Harlem, a neighborhood once feared as a predominantly Black area. She started by capturing snapshots of adorable children, documenting the daily lives of Harlem residents, and the Black liberation movement—a period of racial discrimination and cultural revolution, and a time of awakening social consciousness. This book is a remarkable record of those events by a courageous female journalist, comparable to the work of American photographers like Bruce Davidson, who also captured images of Harlem. This is a complete reprint of the 2010 edition.
