Amethist is een violette variëteit van het mineraal kwarts (SiO2) en is de bekendste steen uit de kwartsgroep.

Brazilië heeft belangrijke afzettingen van amethist, die voornamelijk worden gewonnen uit de staat Rio Grande do Sul (met de stad Ametista do Sul als de belangrijkste producent) en, in tweede instantie, in Bahia. Brazilië is de grootste steenproducent ter wereld

De naam is afkomstig van Oudgrieks ἀμέθυστος (amethustos). Amethist was reeds bekend bij de Egyptenaren, Etrusken en Romeinen, en Plinius de Oudere heeft amethist al beschreven.

In het oude China werden uit amethist kleine gemmen gesneden. In de middeleeuwen werd amethist ook in Europa zeer gewaardeerd. Hij werd bisschopsteen genoemd, omdat het vroeger een geliefde edelsteen was voor kerkelijke hoogwaardigheidsbekleders, en hij magische krachten zou bezitten.[bron?]

Het was het symbool van de verliefden, de steen van matigheid, beschermer tegen tovenarij en hekserij. Bij Jacob van Maerlant is de verklaring te vinden dat de steen dronkenschap verdrijft. Men heeft wel aangenomen dat de Griekse naam "tegen de roes" zou betekenen: van wijn die gedronken wordt uit een beker vervaardigd uit amethist zou men niet dronken kunnen worden.
