This lot brings together two important photography books. Robert Mapplethorpe and the Classical Tradition: Photographs and Mannerist Prints (2004) explores the dialogue between Mapplethorpe’s photography and the heritage of classical art and mannerist printmaking. With essays by Germano Celant, Arkady Ippolitov and Jennifer Blessing, the book highlights how Mapplethorpe’s refined compositions and themes echo centuries of classical tradition, combining scholarly insight with a rich selection of images.

Exhibit A by Guy Bourdin (2001) presents a wide-ranging survey of the groundbreaking fashion photographer’s work. Edited by Samuel Bourdin and Fernando Delgado, with texts by Michel Guerrin and a foreword by Luc Sante, the book offers a striking overview of Bourdin’s radical visual language, which challenged conventions and transformed the world of fashion photography.

Both volumes are now considered collectible. The Mapplethorpe catalogue has become increasingly difficult to obtain, especially in its complete edition, and Exhibit A represents the rare first edition of 2001, which is highly sought after among collectors of photography and fashion history.
