Imperial Russian Silver (84 Zolotnik) Card Case – Moscow, 1899 – Applied Mixed-Metal Decor with Diamond & Demantoid Accent

A captivating and highly personal piece of history from the twilight of the Russian Empire. This antique silver card case, dated 15 February 1899 and hallmarked in Moscow, was created as a unique souvenir – a canvas of memories captured in silver, gold, and gemstones.

Decor & Symbolism
- Bear in oxidized silver with staff, symbol of Russia, its eye set with a tiny green stone, very likely a Ural demantoid garnet (not laboratory tested).
- Applied gilt monogram “MV” inset with a small, jeweler-confirmed old-cut diamond.
- Gilt carnation flower and horseshoe, traditional symbols of admiration and good fortune.
- Dynamic running figure, interpreted either as a swift messenger (Hermes) or a mischievous folkloric imp.
- Central engraved monogram with applied script inscription “Еvа”.

Interior
Original blue silk lining with expanding compartments, showing age-related fading, fraying, and staining but still intact.

Hallmarks & Origin
Pre-1908 Imperial Russian hallmarks.
- “84” zolotnik (.875 silver).
- Town mark consistent with Moscow.
- Maker’s marks worn; research suggests possible attribution to Itska Lozinsky (Ицка Лозинский), a Moscow master active in the 1890s. Attribution not guaranteed.

Condition
- Good antique condition overall.
- Rich, untouched dark patina.
- Expected wear from age and use: small dents, scratches, rubbing on high points.
- Both gemstones intact and secure.
- Hinge and clasp firm and working.
- Interior silk original but fragile with heavy wear.
- No signs of repair or restoration.
